COMPETITION SYLLABUS

The competition is open to all students completing a standard High School Business and Economics syllabus in New Zealand. As these are international events, no specific syllabus is given out. However, most High School internationally recognised syllabus (IB, Cambridge, AP) will cover the general scope of the competition. More details will be given out during the training rounds.

SELECTION PROCESS

Once registered, we will schedule the first selection rounds at Kings College or ACG (Parnell). Those outside Auckland will undergo a proctored test on the same day. The first selection round will be on Thursday, 30th April. Those selected from that will be invited to a full day selection second round on Saturday, 9th May 2026. For those selecting the Business and Finance Olympiad in Bucharest, we will schedule a third session soon after the second round.

ECONOMICS & BUSINESS LITERACY, APPLICATIONS and REAL WORLD FINANCE

The various parts of the competition contains aspects of Economics and Business applications; especially pertaining to the occurrences of current and world events. While we recognise that most of the students are highly capable Business and Economics students, we are also looking for students that are agile in applications and confident in their presentations and capable of working in a team and supporting environment.

The New Zealand Economics Olympiad (NZEO)

The inaugural International Economics Olympiad (IEO) began in September 2018 and New Zealand was one of the founding countries that took part in this event.

From 2023 to 2025, the New Zealand team then joined the Australasian event hosted by the University of New South Wales in Sydney.

This year (2026), the NZEO was invited to compete in 2 International events. As a founding member of the International Economics Olympiad (headquartered in Switzerland), the IEO will be held in Suzhou, China from 12th to 20th July 2026.

The Australasian event in 2026 will now be pushed to 2027 as the Business Faculty in UNSW undergoes some changes. In its place, the NZEO was invited to compete in the inaugural competition encompassing both Economics and Business (IBFO) hosted by Romania (in Bucharest) from 3rd to 7th August 2026.

So 2026 will be the first year where the selections will cover these 2 events. Students can choose to compete in any one or multiple events.

The selection rounds will begin in April.

To compete a student must be under 20 years of age and enrolled in a secondary school in New Zealand. To be eligible for travel to China and Romania, the student must be at least 16 years of age at the time of travel and have the appropriate visa.

APPLICATION PROCESS AND KEY DATES

To compete as a member of the New Zealand team for the various Business and Economics Olympiad teams in 2026, please fill the contact form by 20th April and a member of the organising team will get in touch with you. It is important that all relevant details are reflected in this form. This should include a supporting teacher (usually an Economics or Business teacher) who should be aware about your intention to compete in this event. Please note the tentative dates for the various Business and Economics Olympiad for 2026.

  • International Economics Olympiad, Suzhou, China – 12th to 20th July 2026
  • International Business and Finance Olympiad (inaugural year), Bucharest, Romania – 3rd to 6th August 2026

REGISTRATION

Once your application is processed, a 2 hour test of 30 multiple choice questions, a business case analysis and 8 short answer questions will be held on Thursday 30th April from 5pm to 7pm. For those in Auckland, the test will be hosted at Kings College or ACG (Parnell). For those outside Auckland, it should be completed with supervision (proctored) on the same day. In a few of the multiple-choice questions, an explanation may be required to justify your choice of answer. Unlike 2025, the 2026 test will include a section on Business and Finance as well.

From the test results a shortlist of competitors will be made, and you will be invited to a daylong event (10am to 3pm) in Auckland on Saturday 9th May 2026. This is a compulsory day event that all shortlisted competitors must attend. A fee of $200 will be charged for the day event which will include morning tea and lunch. Judges will be present to select the final 5 students that will make the New Zealand team for each of the 3 competitions. An additional 2 students will be selected as reserve participants.
