COMPETITION SYLLABUS

The competition is open to all students completing a standard High School Economics syllabus. The format of the competition can be found here 

SELECTION PROCESS

Once registered, we will schedule the first selection rounds at Kings College or ACG (Parnell). Those outside Auckland will undergo a proctored test on the same day. The first selection round will be on Wednesday, 7th May. Those selected from that will be invited to a full day selection round on Saturday, 24th May 2025.

ECONOMICS LITERACY, APPLICATIONS and REAL WORLD ECONOMICS

The competition is a 3 round event. The first round will be an online event here in New Zealand held at the end of June. The second and third rounds will be in Sydney between 3rd to 6th July.

The New Zealand Economics Olympiad Committee (NZEOC)

The inaugural Economics Olympiad began in September 2018 and New Zealand was one of the founding countries that took part in this event.

For 2025, the New Zealand team has joined the Australasian event hosted by the University of  New South Wales in Sydney. This now includes various countries in the Asian Pacific region and others as well.

This year, the event will be held from 3rd to 6th July 2025.
At present the New Zealand and Australian teams have suspended our countries involvement in the global Economics Olympiad competition. The reason for the suspension is due to the Russian-Ukraine war and the International Economics Competition is managed from Moscow, Russia.
To compete a student must be under 20 years of age and enrolled in a secondary school in New Zealand. To be eligible for travel to Australia, the student must be at least 16 years of age at the time of travel and have the appropriate visa.

APPLICATION PROCESS AND KEY DATES

To compete as a member of the New Zealand team for the 2025 event hosted in Sydney, Australia, please fill the contact form and a member of the organising team will get in touch with you. It is important that all relevant details are reflected in this form. This should include a supporting teacher (usually an Economics or Business teacher) who should be aware about your intention to compete in this event. For most schools in New Zealand, the competition will be held in the first week of the July holidays.

Registrations are now open for the 2025 Economics Olympiad.

REGISTRATION

Once your application is processed, a 90 minute test of 30 multiple choice questions and 5 short answer questions. For those in Auckland, the test will be hosted at Kings College or ACG (Parnell).  For those outside Auckland, it should be completed with supervision (proctored) on the same day. In a few of the multiple choice questions, an explanation may be required to justify your choice of answer.
From the test results a shortlist of competitors will be made and you will be invited to a day long event (10am to 3pm) in Auckland on Saturday 24th May 2025. This is a compulsory day event that all shortlisted competitors must attend. A fee of $200 will be charged for the day event which will include morning tea and lunch. Judges will be present to select the final 5 students that will make the New Zealand team. An additional 2 students will be selected as reserve participants.
